Dennis Rodman is set to join the Los Angeles Lakers, and Bulls assistant Frank Hamblen must be credited with an assist.

Two weeks ago, when the team first entertained thoughts of signing Rodman, Lakers coach Del Harris called Hamblen to inquire about Rodman. Hamblen worked for years with the Milwaukee Bucks as an assistant under Harris.

Because of conflicting travel schedules, the two never actually spoke, but Hamblen let it be known he thought Harris could handle Rodman and the enormous baggage he brings to a team.

Jokingly, someone asked Hamblen what he had against Harris to recommend he sign Rodman.

"Well," Hamblen said with a smile, "he did leave Milwaukee just before the team went down and left me to coach the team."

With the Bucks amassing an 8-9 record in the 1991-92 season, Harris relinquished his head coaching duties to concentrate on personnel matter.

Hamblen moved over to replace Harris and the team finished with a 23-42 record. The season snapped the Bucks' streak of 12 straight winning seasons and four straight playoff appearances. Milwaukee hasn't been in the playoffs since.
